How to make Alterations on Clothes

Our clothes are very important to us. We want them to fit properly. In our busy lives, there is not much time to spend on our clothes. Every now and then you will find you need to repair and alter your clothes to fit comfortably, the way you want it. If you are interested to know how to do it yourself, it can help a lot.

Clothes alterations can be a profitable business. All that is required is sewing ability and a sewing machine. There are many people who you know that need this kind of service. Working people do not find the time, to be bothered about sewing and alterations. You can find customers very easily for this type of service. They can be secretaries, friends, acquaintances, and others.

Many people has clothes that doesn’t fit them properly. They need them to be altered in some area. Usually the length of the garment is too long or short. Another common area is the waist: it could be too tight or too loose. For the clothes to fit properly, they need to be altered. Not everyone knows how to do alterations. If you have good sewing skills, and know how to do alterations, then you can find a profitable business.

This can save you money and also help you to make money. The most important thing is knowing how to sew. Once you can sew and can handle different types of sewing machines like serger, hemming or other machines, it will be easy to make alterations on any type of clothing. Whether it is pant, dress, skirt or blouse, alterations is needed for a good fitting garment. If you have the knowledge of how garments are put together by sewing, it is an asset. It is important to know how the pieces of fabric are join together to make a shirt, pant or dress. This will help you to make good alterations.

When you want to make alteration on any kind of garment, you have to try it on, and use pins to pin every area you want to be adjusted. In certain cases, you have to rip the area to make adjustment for the right fitting. Say for example, a skirt waist is too large. You will need to pin certain areas near the waist darts, then make an estimate how many inches you need to reduce for the waist. If the length is too long, then you will have to cut out the extra fabric and hem it up. It is also a good idea to use chalk to mark certain areas as a guide where to stitch to make the alterations exactly the way you want it.

The more you do alterations, the easier it becomes. If you are patient and love sewing, repairs and alterations can be a good job. Certain fabrics has to handle with a lot of care. Silky and soft fabrics are harder to handle and require careful handling for alterations. Also certain sewing machines are required for special fabrics, or it will not look professional. If you do not have these types of sewing machines, it might be best to take your clothes to the cleaners, where they can do it properly for you. If you love sewing and making clothes, then alterations can be easy and fun to do. You will not have to pay anyone to alter your clothes.

If you want to decrease the size of the waist band, my best bet is to remove the waistband except the front on both sides of the zipper, so you do not have to attach it again. Then make some darts at the back or front of the pants to make the waist according to your fit. Then fold the waistband in two to find the centre. Cut off the extra piece to make waistband smaller, join it again and attach it to the jeans. Hope this helps.

A male friend of mine brought me a suit that he needs altered. He is very skinny and normally wears his pants in the same fashion.

The waist of the dress pants fits him just fine. He wants only the legs taken in about 2".

How do I go about doing this?
